Your Chaplains
Fr Thomas-Thérèse Mannion, Fr Dermot Morrin and Fr Matthew Jarvis (left to right in picture) are the student chaplains. St Albert’s mission is to provide a spiritual home for students and staff in Edinburgh, to deepen faith through prayer and teaching, through the celebration of Mass and the other sacraments, and to give you any support you need.
The Catholic Chaplaincy
The Catholic Chaplaincy serves the students and staff of the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University and Queen Margaret University. The Catholic Chaplaincy is also a parish of the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh (the parish of St Albert the Great), and Catholic students and staff are automatically members of this parish.
We are based at 23–24 George Square and work closely with the University of Edinburgh’s wider Chaplaincy team which includes chaplains to members of the other Christian denominations, and people of other religions and traditions.
Catholic Students’ Union (CSU)
The CSU organises a whole range of spiritual and social events for both undergraduate and postgraduate students including a mid-week meal. Members have access to the student common room in 23 George Square. Members of the CSU can drop in any time from 8am to 11pm each day. As well as good company and comfortable seats, there are tea and coffee making facilities and a kitchenette and wifi. The chaplains also have their offices in no. 23. The CSU is affiliated to the EUSA. We hope to see you soon at St Albert’s.
Student Mass
Our 6.15pm Sunday Mass is attended mainly by students. The Catholic Students Union organises readers and the choir and each week hosts an event for students after Mass. Students are also welcome at the Sunday morning masses. All Masses are celebrated in the Chapel which is entered from George Square Lane.
For details of other Masses and Morning and Evening Prayer, see the home page. As well as the regular times for Confession on Wednesdays (4-5pm) and Saturdays (11am-12noon) in term, we also celebrate the sacrament on request – just ask.
Sacramental Needs
If you’ve not yet been baptised, confirmed or made your first Holy Communion, we are here to prepare you for these sacraments, and to give you every assistance. We are also available if you have questions about the Catholic Faith.
If you come to Mass here and want your children to be baptised, please contact the parish priest.
If you are getting married do get in touch with us. We get many requests for marriages to take place here in our chapel and are happy to accept if the couple are members of the congregation or have had a strong link with it. Please note that marriage requires at least six months’ notice.
